This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans saw automaker Audi finish in first, second, and third place. Lets look at other notable tests of human stamina.
#10 Vendee Globe
One person, on one yacht, traveling around the world. It’s as simple as that. Founded in 1989, the Vendee Globe, considered one of the most grueling races in sailing, has been run every four years since ’92. Ships depart out of France, down the African coast, round the Cape of Good Hope, around Antarctica, past Cape Horn, up the South American coast, and back to France. One person on one yacht. First one to make it back wins. The next race will be run in 2012.
#9 La Ruta de los Conquistadores
A four-day mountain-bike race across the wilds of Costa Rica. Nearly 250 miles long, and with over 45,000 feet of climbing, the course often leaves riders stuck in thick jungle mud. Passing through a national park and over the slope of a volcano, La Ruta is billed as the most difficult mountain bike competition in the world.
